Musing Monday: Stranger Book Talking

Today's Topic: Book Talking with Strangers

We were all warned as children to 'never talk to strangers', but how do you feel about book-talk with random people? When you see people reading, do you ask what it is? Do you talk to people in a bookstore or library? What do you do if people talk to you?

When I read, I get in this sort of "anti-social, block off reality" type of mood. Not in a bad way, it's just that I get really absorbed in the book that I don't pay attention to what's happening in my surroundings. (Maybe that's why my teachers hate when I read during class :P) But anyways, if someone asks me what I'm reading, then I tell them! I like to share about the summary and try to make them want to read it, too. However, if I see someone reading, I usually don't disturb them...especially if it's a stranger. I don't really like it when someone interrupts my reading, so I try to do the same back.

What about you?

  1. I *hate* it when someone interrupts my reading to ask me about what I'm reading! But I love talking books if my book is closed. For example, if I'm traveling and have the book on my lap, I'd love to talk about it. But if that book is open and I'm reading, leave me alone! :)

  2. First - your blog is really nice :)

To answer the question - I am the same way. I hate when people ask me what I'm reading because I feel like there's an expectation for me to describe the book well and I always sound like an idiot because I'm not well spoken. (I'm very shy.) ... I also never bother people who are reading.

  3. Usually people never talk to me unless I am reading. Something about seeing me read makes people feel like they can open a conversation with me and if they ask then I will tell them about my book.
P.S. I have an award for you.
