Project: Read The Shelves

I'm starting a challenge for myself starting today, April 1st, 2011 until April 1, 2014 - that's right, a three year project for me to work on. Over the past two years that I've had this blog, I've accumulated a lot of books. And by a lot, I mean three entire bookshelves in my room are crammed with as many books as can possibly fit. I've become such a compulsive book buyer. Every time I walk into a bookstore, I never leave empty-handed. However, now that all the Borders stores in my town have closed (so sad!) I think in a way it will be good for me. I'll be able to save my money and actually have an excuse to finally start reading all of the many books on my shelves waiting their turn to be read. I'm also a very sloooooow reader..I usually only finish about two books a month. Anywho, before I make this longer than it is already, I'm going to list 100 books that are currently sitting on my shelf collecting dust. My goal is to have all 100 of them read in three years. This is just a challenge for myself to see if I can really do it, but I'd love some encouragement along the way! (Those bloggers who read two books a week can be really intimidating sometimes...) I know this sounds like a very easy project for some of you, but I honestly don't know if I'll be able to finish all 100, with all of the other amazing books that will be published along the way. We'll just have to wait and see!

  1. My first thought was I want to read them all, too! So I will! Although it will probably take me longer than three years...

I've read five already, so that leaves me with 95.

Awesome goal - you can do it!

  2. Those all look like great books! I'm the same way, I have so many books on my shelves right now, and I work in a bookstore, so the employee discount actually encourages me to spend more money by buying more books!

  3. The best of luck goes out to you! I don't think I'd be able to stick to the list - there are so many other books out there that keep on coming that unfortunately, many of those I hear are wonderful get pushed behind. Maybe I'll join you!

  4. You can do it! Goodreads has a great reading goal for the year. Once you've read a book, you can mark it as finished and it will give you a percentage of how much you've read towards your goal. Also, you can do this for individual books. It helps me to see how much I'm accomplishing. You could always divide your 100 into 3 and you'll have about 33 books a year. This number seems way less intimidating. You have so many good books too!

I'm getting a Nook for my graduation present in May so I'm in big trouble where my booking buying obsession is concerned. At least it will cut down on the random piles of books in my room everywhere.

My goal is 111 books for the year. Eeep! I don't know why I did that to myself, but I have a thing about numbers and it felt right. Good Luck and with your goal and keep us posted! :)

  5. -Thanks Jennifer!

-Kayla, wow I would have the same problem. It must be awesome to work there though!

-Lissa, yep that's my problem. I get stoked about a new book and buy it, but then a few months later I forget about it because of all of the many other books coming out!

  6. Thanks so much for the comment Devan! I hadn't heard about the Goodreads 2011 Reading Challenge before, but am joining it now. :) I'm setting my goal for 50 - since I plan on reading books from my "read the shelves" list, but also others, too.
That's so exciting about getting a nook! I have a Kindle, and absolutely love it. Good luck on your goal!

  7. I consider myself a slow reader as well. I currently read about one book a week. I hope you will be able to read all those books! I have read wintergirls myself a short while ago, here are my thoughts on it if you are interested: http://uniflamecreates.blogspot.com/2011/03/book-review-wintergirls-by-laurie-halse.html

I actually found that I was able to read through that one rather quickly. I love YA books for that reason. The letter are bigger and therefore it seems like I am reading much faster ;)

  9. I'm just like you! I understand you :)
You have all my support! =D

Can I make a suggestion? You could post your progress every... 6 months? once a year? So you can check yourself and we keep your personal challenge on mind :)
